The story of dark matter proves popular in National Science Week

A masterclass explaining the Centre’s research into the nature of dark matter attracted attendees from across Australia and around the world.

The Mid-Afternoon Masterclass on Lighting the Dark Universe was hosted by PhD students Madeleine Zurowski and William Melbourne as part of the University of Melbourne’s Science Festival.

During the event, Zurowski and Melbourne explained to the audience, who included listeners as young as 10 years old, what is known about dark matter, and how researchers at the Centre are trying to understand it.

The talk included information about the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory, which is currently under construction, and details of the SABRE experiment, which will operate underground when the laboratory is complete.

At the end of the presentation, attendees asked a range of questions about the research
