Professor Phil Hopkins (Caltech) is a world-leading computational astrophysicists and expert on dark matter simulations, and has developed one of the standard supercomputer simulation codes, GIZMO.

He has a very strong and active research interest relating to galaxy formation simulations within the dark matter paradigm.

Collaborating closely with the Centre’s Alan Duffy, Professor Hopkins works within the Centre’s Theory program, using his galaxy formation simulations to explore various dark matter models.

A highly-regarded supervisor of undergraduate and postgraduate students, he will assist with the mentoring and research of the Centre’s PhD students as an advisory supervisor. He is very actively involved in outreach, particularly at the high school level, and his expertise in producing visualisation animations is of particular value to the Centre’s activities in this area.
